Fishing

The Tengu Club

Fishing is Hilary Hutcheson’s life, and before she knew it, her career. But, by her own admission, she overlooked opportunities to learn about her heritage as a Japanese American to focus on being on the water. So when motherhood sparked a curiosity to learn more about herself and her family, she sought out a distant relative in Seattle with a shared love of fishing. As she peels back the layers of her own identity, she learns about Tengu Club, the oldest salmon fishing club in the United States. By exploring the club’s creation and its enduring legacy, Hilary confronts pieces of unexposed history, revealing the aftermath of WWII and the internment camps for thousands of Japanese American families.
